The larger vineyard layout provided room for 14 more grapevines. I had room for eight vines of an additional variety (I chose Merlot) and a few spaces for some already planted. I ordered three additional Norton (out of stock), one Arandell and two Chambourcin to fill the gaps. The spaces for the two Chambourcin were impenetrable with my tractor, but a friend with a Bobcat-mounted post hole digger made short work of that.
The vines arrived the following week, and I quickly got them planted, the last of them using a head-mounted flash light.
There are now 107 vines, with three openings for Norton which I will have to plant next year. The empty spaces play havoc with my OCD.
I walk the line every day, looking in on each vine to assess its progress. They seem to grow while I watch. It is very satisfying.
