Netting Has Started

The Baco Noir and Arandell varieties have ripened sufficiently to get the attention of the birds. They started hitting on two or three bunches on one vine, signaling sugar content high enough to warrant netting those two varieties. The Baco is ahead of the Arandell by several weeks, and many of the bunches are well colored as of July 4. I have not yet checked the brix with my refractometer, but will do so this weekend.

The netting I'm using this year is a light-weight "extruded" netting made by Tenax that has been easy to install. It is very difficult to see, unlike the woven netting I used last year, and appears to be tough. I bought this at Orchard Valley Supply at the end of season sale last year, well below their current price, but have now found it from other suppliers at a lower price. I have no idea of the long-term effectiveness, but so far, it works like a champ.
