I decided to follow the recommendations in The Grape Grower, one of the references guiding me in the adventure, and mulch the vines with compost. All three of the books I've come to rely on speak highly of compost as part of the process. I found a local bulk supplier for compost and contracted with a landscaper to deliver 10 yards to the house. That was about three weeks ago and it is yet to arrive.
I called again this morning and was assured it would be delivered by Saturday. If the delivery comes through, I will be able to mulch all the vines this weekend.
I am trying to do this exercise as organically as possible. I would rather avoid chemical fertilizers and pesticides until I have no other choice.
