I looked at the 10-day forecast last night and at 10:30 p.m. the Weather.com app on my iPad said we were looking at 10 straight 100-degree days and very little chance of rain.
Last month, we got .32 in. of rain against a normal of 3.86 in. June is slightly better so far, with 1.13 in. to date. Normal is 1.97 in. by June 16. But the June temperatures are a different story. The southeastern states are experiencing temperatures from 5 to 15 degrees higher than normal. We are currently about 10 degrees above our normal.
I am a long time reader of Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate newsletter, and hold his wine rankings in the highest regard. When Parker or one of his writers report on a new vintage for important wine regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa, Sonoma., etc., they write a detailed report on the weather during the growing season and harvest. I always found this discussion a little boring.
Now that I'm trying to grow grapes, I am obsessed with temperature and rainfall and write about it incessantly in this diary.
This morning, the Weather app had changed the forecast to high 90s for most of the days over the next week. And there's a 50 percent chance of rainfall on Thursday and Friday. Here's hoping.
