The Japanese beetle infestation has come and gone. It appears this is one of those transient problems that shows up suddenly, does its damage, then ends just as suddenly with only a bunch of skeletonized leaves as a reminder that the invasion occurred. I believe the little buggers probably left their spawn in the soil below the vines, waiting to emerge next year.
I continue to try and minimize the use of pesticides and other chemicals in the vineyard. I sprayed a few times during the outbreak, and finally settled on Sevin dust to beat back the invaders. I will likely need to treat the soil to minimize the damage next year from the grubs and emerging adults.
In the mean time, I pick off the most unsightly leaves for appearance's sake as I walk the vineyard each day.
